The new Long Lots Elementary School and Stepping Stones Preschool is in active construction. Below is the construction timeline, organized by project phases, followed by the latest updates from the field.

Construction Timeline

From shovel to first day of school

Click through for a high-level overview of the major phases of a new school build.

Newfield Construction estimates the new building phase will take approximately 20 months, with student move-in projected for January 2028 and completion of site improvements and playgrounds by August 2028.

Footings and Foundations

  • Excavation for footings, foundations and utilities.

Existing conditions and terraces

The property steps down in elevation as you go from the South to the North (looking from left to right from Hyde Lane), from the former community gardens on terrace 1, to the existing parking and school on terrace 2, to the existing baseball and soccer fields on terrace 3, to the lower soccer fields on terrace 4.

Construction Updates as of September 16, 2026

Foundation work is nearing completion across the building footprint as crews finish the cafeteria and gymnasium sections, wrap up waterproofing, and prepare for the lower-level slab and structural steel.

What crews are doing right now

  • Installing formwork for the final sections of the building foundation (cafeteria and gymnasium) and backfilling around completed sections.
  • Continue installation of foundation and elevator pit waterproofing and insulation.
  • Roughing in underground electric, plumbing and fire protection prior to the pouring of the first-floor slab.

Underground and sitework

  • Installation of underground domestic and fire service water mains.
  • Continued installation of stormwater structures on the north side of terrace four.
  • Start of excavation and grading of the northerly storm water retention basin.

What families will notice

  • Concrete and pump trucks on site most weekdays as the last foundation elements are placed.
  • The full building footprint is now visible from Hyde Lane and neighboring streets.
  • Construction entrance and fencing remain in their current locations.

Coming up next

  • Remaining foundation pours should wrap up by early October.
  • Elevator CMU walls to be installed.
  • Lower-level floor slab pours expected to begin in October.
  • Structural steel expected to begin once the underground utilities are completed and inspected.
